What Is a Clinical Trial?

A clinical trial is the scientific term for a study of a drug or device (for example, stents and pacemakers) that is done in people. These studies are done to see whether the drug or device is safe and effective for people to use. Health professionals run these studies according to strict rules as established by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA sets these rules to make sure that people who volunteer to be in a research study are treated safely.
Why Volunteer?
By volunteering to take part in a clinical trial you are able to try new treatments that may or may not be better than those currently available. Your volunteering may also help the healthcare professionals understand how the particular drug or device works in people of different ages, races and genders.
